The end of the year is just ahead so I thought it would be a good idea to recap on our achievements as a community.

I’ve been so inspired by the growth of our competitions and the level of passion for creative imaging you’ve shown in 2010. I also enjoyed the addition of the 6th Brief to EOS Photo5 – by partnering with Channel Nine we’ve brought more people to the World of EOS, which helps us all take our photography skills to a new level.

2010 has seen some amazing World of EOS imagery, many of which have won in our competitions: EOS Photo5 and 6th Brief, EOS 1wall, and EOS Photochains.

Keep watching the blog for profiles on each of the EOS Photo5 winners, be inspired by their advice, and find out what motivated their photography.

With this in mind, I wanted to share some great achievements for the Canon EOS brand. Recently, Canon received three prestigious awards from Camera magazine in the 2010-2011 Imaging awards.

Canon’s EOS cameras dominated the DSLR categories with the EOS-1D Mark IV winning in the “Professional Digital SLR” category and the EOS 7D winning in the “Enthusiast Digital SLR”.

Canon also claimed the only award in the only non-camera category – Best Digital Photo Printer for the Canon SELPHY CP800.

Another exciting achievement is Buy-n-Shoot’s Reviewer's Choice Awards for 2010. Online Photography site Buy-n-Shoot, posted an article on the top Reviewers Choice Awards for 2010. Canon won two awards: one for EOS and the other for a PowerShot compact camera.

For the sixth year in a row Canon was awarded PC Authority’s Best Tech Awards for the ‘best inkjet printer’. Canon scored solidly for cost efficiency of ink cartridge replacement as well as stellar print quality, describing it as a consistently excellent product range.

Canon EOS 550D and 7D win esteemed Technical Image Press Association awards

Canon Australia is celebrating a massive win - five of its products were recognised with “Best Product 2010” awards by the prestigious Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), representing 29 photography and imaging magazines across 13 European countries. The five award-winning products are: the EOS 550D and EOS 7D digital SLR cameras, the PowerShot G11 compact digital camera, the PIXMA MP990 inkjet printer, and the imagePROGRAF iPF6350 large-format inkjet printer.

The Canon EOS 550D was honoured with the “Best DSLR Advanced in 2010” award. The judges said that the camera was “dedicated to the demanding consumer, but definitely usable by any amateur and enthusiast photographer”. The camera was also praised for its “impressive number of settings and functions”, including Full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) recording and a Live View mode.

The Canon EOS 7D digital SLR secured the “Best DSLR Expert in 2010” award, being recognised for its 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C size) and its ability to deliver “superb results” up to ISO 6400. The judges said, “Action photographers will love shooting at 1/8000 sec. shutter speed and ultra fast frame rates”, noting that “exceptional HD video makes this camera the choice of professional video makers”.

Winning “Best Expert Compact Camera in 2010”, the Canon PowerShot G11 was recognised as a “well-built and user-friendly” camera with a diverse range of functions and capabilities that photographers need. The judges thought that the model, which features a 28–140mm (equivalent) optical zoom lens and high-resolution 10.0-megapixel CCD sensor, “is a great tool to work with precision and discretion”.

The Canon PIXMA MP990 inkjet printer was selected as “Best Multifunction Photo Printer in 2010”. The printer was recognised for its “innovative features”, including Auto Photo Fix II with multi-zone exposure correction, which brings the best out of portrait and scenery shots, ensuring the optimum colour balance and brightness.

EOS World in Review

Happy New Year! Hope you all managed to take a break over Christmas and are looking forward to an exciting 2010…I know we are!

In 2009, Canon EOS had its most exciting and successful year yet and you can expect this to continue. This year, we’ll deliver new innovative products, continue to build on the popular World of EOS site and provide you with plenty more online digital SLR video tutorials.

Hope you’re all enjoying the EOS 1wall challenges. Congratulations to Naomi Frost for winning the Judge’s Choice award and to dpetranker for winning the People’s Choice award for the ‘motion’ challenge. Check out this post to see the winning images and comments from judge Graham Monro.

And thanks to everyone who’s entered the latest ‘in motion’ challenge – I look forward to seeing the finalists selected by judge, Mark Horsburgh – these will be announced on January 22.

We’ve had some great reviews lately of the EOS 7D digital SLR which was launched in October last year. To read these, check out the latest editions of Camera and ProPhoto magazine, as well as Margaret Brown’s review on PhotoReview.

I think Paul Burrows from Camera and ProPhoto magazine sums up the camera perfectly... and of course I’m not biased:

“It is an exceedingly comfortable camera to handle, intuitive in its operation and, of course, immensely capable. As a result it goes straight to the top of the ‘APS-C’ class. Ah, Canon, you’ve done it again!”

I also thought I’d share a cool video shot on the EOS 1D Mark IV that I came across online – http://vimeo.com/8324034. Shot in Prague, the clip showcases the impressive low-light capabilities of the camera. It’s really fantastic, so I recommend you check it out.

Oh, and some other quirky EOS news I came across was this article on Gizmodo talking about how a Canon EOS 400D digital SLR was dropped from a height of 900m while the photographer was skydiving, and amazingly it’s still working! We always tell you our cameras are durable, don’t we!

September EOS World in Review

Hey guys,

Sorry my post is late this month – I’ve been photographing my way around Greece and Turkey for the last couple of weeks! I’ve pasted some of my photos below… in case you weren’t already jealous enough! These were all taken on the EOS 5D Mark II which I absolutely loved shooting with. Its incredibly high ISO capabilities proved invaluable as you can see by my shot of the Sunken Palace in Istanbul (the first image below). The depth of colour also continued to blow me away every time – check out the image of the sunset to see what I’m talking about!

Anyway, enough about me. A couple of updates for you all:

As you may have seen, the EOS Photo5 competition has again been a huge hit with registrations for the EOS Photo5 box filling in just five days! Luckily Canon has introduced the open brief this year which means there is no limit on entry numbers – you can still register for this so make sure you do if you haven’t already. Uploading for the competition began last week – there are already such great images being uploaded and the standard is high! Can’t wait to see more.

Also, the 2009 Canon AIPP APPA travelling exhibition kicks of today in Melbourne. It runs until October 24 at the Atrium, Federation Square, Cnr Swanston and Flinders Streets. I’d definitely recommend that you head there to see the amazing winning images. If you’re not in Melbourne, check out the travelling exhibition schedule on the AIPP website to see when it will be in a city near you.

Another cool thing we wanted to let you know about (especially for those photojournalists out there) is that the Griffith University, Queensland College of Art has just launched the Centre for Documentary Practice (CDP). It’s an extension of the Australian PhotoJournalist publication.

The CDP will publish the best of photojournalism on its website, provide an online community for photojournalists, offer relevant resources for the community and host regular online events to provoke discussion and debate about issues pertinent to photojournalism and documentary practice. Very cool!

Check out their website for details about the world’s first online journalism and documentary conference taking place on October 15.

During this conference details of the CDP Emerging Photographer Award will be announced and you’ll have the chance to win a EOS 5D Mark II premium kit and a speedlight donated by Canon Australia.

And now that September is over, we’re busy gearing up for what looks to be a big October with the much anticipated EOS 7D DSLR arriving in Australian stores. It’s also the month that Canon officially celebrates its 50 years of SLR. Bring it on!

August World in Review - Canon EOS 7D digital SLR announced!

Big news this month! Today we announced a new Canon EOS enthusiast-level digital SLR camera that is absolutely packed with features – the EOS 7D.

Introducing the ultimate all-rounder camera…

The EOS 7D is able to capture a variety of subjects in different shooting conditions and incorporates features that will allow you to push your limits creatively and experience increased control and incredible results. An 18.0 megapixel Canon-developed CMOS sensor and Dual DiG!C 4 image processors ensure outstanding image quality with fine detail, low noise and brilliant reproduction of colour and tones. The EOS 7D also features FULL HD movie recording.

The key specs:
-   18.0 Megapixel CMOS sensor
-   1st Canon EOS camera with Dual DIG!C 4 image processors
-   19-point (all cross type) Auto Focus

Specs aside, I’ve tried this camera out and believe me, it’s truly impressive.

We also announced three new additions to our EOS lens range, including two new standard zoom lenses and the world’s first macro lens with a shift direction Image Stabilizer – enthusiast and professional photographers will love them!
