Happy New Year EOS Community!

To start off the year, we thought it might be a nice idea to inspire you with a short interview we conducted with the EOS Photo5 Bubblegum Brief winner, Kevin Estey

We found his image very unique and love the way his interpretation of the Bubblegum Brief differed from many others.

Let us know how you would like to expand on your photography this year.

1) What motivated you to compete in the EOS Photo5 competition?

I suppose there were a few things that motivated me.  Firstly, someone at work emailed  about the competition and mentioned they had done it the previous year, and how much fun it was.

I watched the video, and thought it looked like a great  way to explore the opportunity of taking some creative photos within a set of criteria.  I usually take casual photos of events, family and friends, but working in a creative field, inspired me to incorporate  extra levels of creative thinking into my photography.  The competition seemed like a great opportunity to push myself in that direction.

I also loved the idea that I didn't know what the categories would be until I received the box.  It added to the mystery and fun of it all.

With my wife being 6 months pregnant with our first child, it was a great excuse to take some pregnancy photos of her with some flair and creativity.  And since both of us work in a creative field, and enjoy collaborating together, it was a wonderful chance for us to collaborate at home :-)

2) What inspires your photography?

I'd say the people around me inspire my photography the most.

I am a movie geek working in the film industry,  and I think films inspire my photography.  I am inspired by the abundance of creativity and talent I am surrounded by on a daily basis at work and with my friends.  Whether it is photography, filmmaking, music, art, etc, there is such a wealth of creativity surrounding me, that it is hard not to be inspired by it all!

3) Describe what the EOS online community means to you?

The EOS online community is new to me, I only became aware of it through this competition.  But as a result of this contest, it could mean wonderful exposure, and in seeing all the great work by others, a wonderful source of further inspiration.

4) Have you participated in any other World of EOS competitions?

I have never participated in another EOS competition.

5) How would you describe yourself as a photographer?

As for describing myself, I think I fall between " I am confident using manual settings and a range of lenses" and "I'm an advanced photographer"  It's hard to label myself as "advanced", but my camera is one of the ways I communicate, and it's often an extension of myself.

6) Are there any professional photographers that you aspire to?

At the moment, I can't say that there are any professional photographers I admire, as I don't follow the who's who in the photography world too much.  I certainly respect and applaud Philip Bloom for the advancements he has made to propel the world of DSLR filmmaking, and to repeatedly show the world what these cameras truly are capable of.

When I was in University, the one photographer I continually found myself drawn to time and time again was Edward Weston.  His appreciation and presentation of shape and form compelled me to really explore the same sort of abstraction.  I sometimes still do find myself falling back to this method of photography from time to time.
