EOS World in Review for July

Last weekend the ‘The Sydney Morning Herald Photos - 1440: A Day, a Minute, a Moment’ exhibition wrapped up, marking the end of this year’s Canon EOS Festival of Photography.

I hope you managed to make it along to all or some of the festival’s events! Here’s a bit of a wrap up for those of you who may have missed out…

Head On for the first time moved out of a single gallery and literally took over Sydney as a full-scale festival. Everywhere I turned I could see galleries taking part in the Head On Festival. Can’t wait to see what level they take it to next year!

The Canon AIPP Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPAs) also didn’t disappoint, showcasing the usual high-calibre of professional photography from around Australia. We interviewed the Australian Professional Photographer of the Year winner, Peter Coulson - you can check it out on the Canon website.

This year saw AIPP announce an exciting new video category to the APPAs next year. With Full HD video becoming an important technology on digital SLR cameras and professional photographers being increasingly required to shoot video along with their stills, this category will offer an exciting new level of competition!

The Sydney Morning Herald Photos - 1440: A Day, a Minute, a Moment’, another EOS Festival event, was an amazing exhibition showcasing Australian journalism at its best, covering social aspects of daily life. This was the exhibition’s inaugural year and it ran alongside the World Press Photo exhibition in Sydney which was great!

The photojournalism on display at this year’s World Press Photo was as always, astounding, emotive and awe-inspiring, all at the same time. Here’s an image of Femke van der Valk (World Press Photo representative); Craig Golding (Australian winner: 2nd prize in the Sports Action Stories category); Mr Kenji Kobayashi (CEO of Canon Australia); and Justin McManus (Australian winner: 3rd prize in the People in the News Singles category), standing beside Pietro Masturzo’s winning World Press Photo of the Year image, at the official exhibition opening in Sydney.

We’re already looking forward to next year’s Canon EOS Festival of Photography, where we are likely to announce some new additions.  Stay tuned.

This is all great but not once have you mentioned that 1440 and World Press Photo are hosted by the fantastic State Library of NSW who showed both exhibitions free of charge.
