Winners of the first EOS 1Wall competition announced

Congratulations to the winners of the first EOS 1wall competition! The theme for this challenge was ‘Emotions’. Judge Graham Monro chose this theme because emotion is such an important element to a photo – I’m sure you’ll all agree that the winning images have definitely proved this!

The “Judge’s Choice” winning image was taken by NaomiFrost and titled Roger. This amazing image shows Roger the clown considering retirement as the clowning industry is not what it used to be. Graham says the shot of Roger really stood out because ‘it has great composition and mood and is a well executed and thought out image’.

The below image taken by dpetranker was voted as the “People’s Choice” winner. Graham commented that it was ‘gutsy and heart wrenching’ and it’s easy to see why this image was a favourite.

Thanks to everyone who entered, there were some outstanding photos. The theme for the next EOS 1wall is ‘In Motion’ and will be judged by EOS Master, Mark Horsburg. You’ll need to upload your entry by 17th January. Graham’s advice to those competing in the next wall is to ‘read the brief, be artistic and go out on a limb.’

On another note, we had a quick chat to Graham recently and asked him a couple of questions about his career as a photographer that we thought you might be interested in! Here it is…

1. Given you’ve recently become one of Canon’s six EOS Masters, tell us about your history with EOS. I have been using Canons since the 70s. I updated to all new Canon gear in 1984. The Canon Professional Services (CPS) guys really support working professionals, they are up to date on all the latest gear and what the industry is doing. I like to be involved with the best, that’s why I’m with Canon.
2. What inspires you as a photographer? It’s a great community of photographers with the AIPP and Sydney is really set up well with lots of competitions and exhibitions. Life and light inspire me with photography. It opens a lot of doors for me and gets me to meet lots of interesting people.
3. Do you have a career highlight? Travelling to Mongolia in 1984.
4. What equipment do you use and what is your favourite item? I have two 5D Mark IIs and seven lenses. At the moment my favourite is the 50mm Macro – it’s lightweight and I always carry a camera so I don’t even realize it’s on my shoulder.
5. Do you have a favourite image that you’ve shot? Vince and his dad (below) are one of my favourites. It was a finalist in Head On this year and also in M.I.L.K – the International competition/book and exhibition.

The photo is titled "PADRE E FIGLIO" (Italian for father and son) and was shot at a wedding.

"I was commisioned to shoot this wedding by Vince Lagano ,a handsome young art director when he married the gorgeous graphic designer Angela Manconi. This photo was taken at Vince's family home at Auburn in the lounge room. It was a classic Italian Australian loungeroom, ornate with religious icons and immaculate. Vince was standing with his dad Guiseppe and put his arm around him. Guiseppe lent on Vince and let out a sigh and said "Ah Vince my son" as Vince kissed him. It was a classic moment, the fourth frame of five shot in that sequence. It epitomizes all that is good of weddings Love, Family and Friendship."

Technical information: Canon EOS 1N camera and 17-35mm lens

I have just tried to upload an image for 1wall, and received "there has been an error while trying to upload the image". This happens both with FireFox and IE (both at the latest levels).

This also occurred with the EOS5 competition last year!

When is Canon going to prevent people from submitting multiple entries?

Hi Pat,

Not sure what the problem is there. I would suggest sending an email to 1wall@canon.com.au and letting them know the issue. They should be able to help you.

Hi Steve,

We've put the best systems possible into place to make sure that you can only enter once. If an individual is found to have uploaded more than one image they will be disqualified. If you can see any obvious signs of cheating please feel free to email us at 1wall@canon.com.au with any further information you may have.

Also getting the error message. Alas! it's a friday 15th evening and the competition deadline is Sunday 17th, so emailing Canon at this stage would be rather fruitless!

My file is a jpg, it's under 5mg,and I'm not the only one, so I am thinking there might be an issue at Canons end!

Ahh Lauren, you're so helpful! I hope you work on Saturdays! But I am guessing not.. ahh well there is always the next wall.

Hi, Lea again,

In case this helps anyone else who has this afore mentoned issue.

I emailed canon's help address and the email bounced, so I googled the 'error 2308' apparently this can sometimes be a flash issue, which would make sense.. I installed flash yesterday and I have just seen another site I regularly upload to with no issues (not related to canon)now gives me the same 2308 message.

I then thought I'd try firefox(was initialy using google chrome) and no dice, but IE worked... it still gave me the error message but when I clicked x on that message box it started uploading and all went fine from there.

hope this helps

Hi,

There seems to be a problem with the Hero Chain timeline, Images uploaded on the last day (Thursday) often do not appear on the Hero Chain entry site until the following Monday. This means that they are not visible to members over the weekend and may miss out on votes. Maybe the time between close of entries and start of voting needs to be lengthened to ensure that all entries submitted before the deadline go through the moderation process before voting starts?

Regards

Hi,

I'm in the same boat as Patrick, perhaps a delay between entries closing and voting beginning would be helpful. I would imagine a great many votes are spent on the first day (or three) following the deadline for entries.

Thanks,
