Registrations now open for Canon’s creative EOS Photo5 photography competition

It’s that time of year again, when you get to unleash your imagination, creativity and passion for the chance to win amazing prizes and, most importantly, eternal glory.

Yes, the EOS Photo5 competition is kicking off again, with registrations now open. For those of you who don’t know, the EOS Photo5 competition is in its third year and is based on a creative brief centred around five objects in a box sent to registered participants. Those taking part transform these objects through photography into inspiring images and upload them to the Photo5 site. This year, the competition is bigger, better and more challenging than ever before - the rules have changed, the prizes have changed, the briefs have changed and the level of difficulty has definitely changed!

Without giving too much away, I can let you know that those taking part will be tasked with not just shooting the EOS Photo5 object, but also incorporating a specific creative photography technique.

For the first time, EOS Photo5 will also run in New Zealand making it possible for Kiwis with a creative flare to have a go. Another exciting change to this competition is the inclusion of an ‘open brief’ meaning that people who miss out on receiving a box can still enter - now there is no limit for how many Australians and New Zealanders can get involved.

So, if you’re keen to let your photographic brilliance dazzle us all, then make sure you get in quick and register for the competition at http://www.canon.com.au/worldOfEos/photo5/. Boxes are limited so people should register as soon as they can. Registration is free. Winners will be announced on November 23, 2009. Every winner (five in total) receives an EOS 5D Mark II Premium Kit (with EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM) and a trip to Queensland, hosted by professional adventure photographer Chris Bray.

Here on the blog, we’ll be posting EOS Photo5 news and information, as well as connecting you to other Australian blogs discussing Canon EOS Photo5 so you can hear what they’re saying. Stay tuned!

I got my box this week. The themes are much better than previous years. They open just so many more creative possibilities, and I really like the change in focus to more technical tasks rather than photographing objects. Can't wait to see what images are created!

On Saturday I logged in & clicked on 'Register' & entered all my address details so I could receive my EOS Photo5 Box. But today when I log in & click on 'Register', it says 'sorry...all the boxes have been taken for 2009'. Does that mean I missed out? How do I know if my registration was successful?

I'm in the same boat as Lou -- I registered first day and now have no idea if I'm getting a box or not. *SIGH*

To quote or mate Lou -- "How do I know if my registration was successful?"

Hi Lou and rhemaangel,

In regards to your questions about whether your registration was successful, you should have got a confirmation screen after you registered, there isn’t a confirmation email. If you can’t remember whether you got the confirmation screen then you can send an email to the Photo5 support team, Photo5@canon.com.au, and they can check if you registration was successful.

I hope that helps!

I tried to register today and got the "Sorry" message, but it says I can still enter the open comp. How do I register for it? there is no link and any "Brief" links in the FAQ just redirect straight back the FAQ header menu.. is there a problem with the site? or am I just missing something.

I missed out on a box - obviously they went pretty quickly.  Now they're all gone I thought we'd be able to see the details of the briefs, but I haven't been able to find them on the site.  All the links in the FAQs just take me back to the FAQs.  I'd like to know the details of the open brief - can you tell me where to find them, please?

Thank you

Hi Hamish, Vickis, Froshi and Emily,

You don’t actually have to register to take part in the ‘open brief’. Details of the ‘open brief’ will be revealed on the EOS Photo5 website and the blog by the end of this week. You then simply take an image that responds to the brief and once upload period begins (September 28), you just need to create a mycanon account and enter your image. Also keep an eye out on the blog for a special chance to receive one of the last remaining boxes for this year’s competition. Stay tuned!

Hi Indi,

After you registered a confirmation screen should have showed up, if you are unsure whether this happened you can email the Photo5 team, Photo5@canon.com.au,  with your details and they will be able to tell you whether your registration was successful. The box takes about 10 working days to be delivered so I suggest you wait a while longer and see if it comes.

In regards to the ‘open brief’ the details should be revealed within the next couple of days, so keep an eye out.

Hi

I registered for the competition on the 31st of August but am yet to recieve my box. The FAQ on the Photo5 site say allow for 7 working days for the box to arrive and it has now been 10 working days. I live in a major city so I'm a bit concerned I wont be recieving my box. Have all the boxes been sent out yet?

Geoffrey

Hi Geoffrey,

Your Photo5 box shouldn’t be too far away, maybe just wait a couple more days. If you did want to check and make sure that your registration was successful, you can email the Photo5 team at Photo5@canon.com.au.

Hi there.

I havn't received my box yet either, so i'm not sure exactly whats in there but I'm just wondering with the Bokeh brief if we are allow to make our own lens filters or do we have to use the ones supplied?

Sep 13 2009, 06:50 AM

Ben said:

Just a clarification about the bokeh brief. Are we allowed to make our own templates, or modify the ones give to us to be a different shape?

Sep 13 2009, 01:06 PM

Lauren said:

Hi Kimberly and Ben,

You must use the bokeh templates that are provided in your Photo5 box.

I also registered on 31st August, and actually sent the Photo5@canon.com.au an email on the same day asking to change my registered address. I have not received my box or a reply from the team as to if my registration went through or if they can change my address. I will send another now, and imagine they are swamped... but i am getting anxious!

i registered 31st aug @ 2am & i live in sydney, and i haven't received a box.

where are they shipped from?

why the hold up?

are we allowed to sauce our own items so we can at-least start? some people got boxes 2 weeks ago and its a bit of a disadvantage having to wait so long while others are already playing with ideas....

Sep 14 2009, 04:02 PM

Lauren said:

Hi Nicole and Rachael,

I completely understand your frustration. Your boxes should be arriving really soon – but in the meantime please send another email with your details to photo5_support@canon.com.au so we can look at our records to double check that your boxes are on their way.  For most of the briefs you really need the items in the box, but if you’re desperate to start you probably could source you own hundreds and thousands, as it’s outlined in the brief that everyone is free to do this. And of course you are able to start on the ‘open brief’.

Hmmmm...I could swear that on the video bokeh tutorials Chris says you can make your own similar bokeh masks. It would be nice to have some consistency of rules. I'm going to have to see if the supplied ones work on my camera as the lens is very small.

Sep 21 2009, 03:25 PM

Lauren said:

Hi Frances,

In Chris’s tutorial on the EOS Photo5 bokeh brief webpage he says that you must use one of the three provided bokeh hoods for your submission to be eligible, however he does say that if you are interested to explore bokeh beyond the Photo5 competition 2009 it is possible to make your own at home. Hope that clears up any confusion.

Thank you !Love the 5 briefs and it's very inspiring. Am learning heaps (trial and error..) by using settings which were totally unfamiliar to me and am certainly going to play with them some more at a later date.Going to put my entries in early (girlsblouse effect)before i get to intimidated seeing all those fab images that will be entered.

Are you allowed to change (cut, colour, reconfigure)the items supplied in the box.I believe it was allowed last year(umbrellas paper tops removed)just wondering if the same applies this year.

Sep 29 2009, 11:34 AM

Lauren said:

Hi pjs2,

The specific requirements of each brief differ so you should check the descriptions in your brief booklet. For example you can source your own hundreds and thousands or use an opaque liquid for the Splat brief. However you must use the Bokeh hoods and the spectacles provided.  You can cut the glasses if you like, they just have to be featured in the image. I hope that helps. If you have a specific enquiry try sending an email to photo5_support@canon.com.au

Hi Ryan,

So sorry it has taken me ages to reply, I thought I had responded but I must have been imagining things. Unfortunately, only Australian and New Zealand residents can participate in the Canon EOS Photo5 competition. Sorry!
