July World in Review

Hi everyone,

I can’t believe it‘s August already. Where’s the year gone? July seems to have sped by – not surprising though given how busy we’ve been developing new and exciting content for the World of EOS.

Last month we kept our resident expert Chris Bray busy filming seven new tutorials for the site. You’ll start to see some of these fantastic videos appearing over the course of the month and we’ve tried to cater to everyone. Topics for those getting started on their journey in DSLR photography include depth of field and the magic triangle - how aperture, ISO and shutter speed work together. For the more experienced folk, we help you get more creative by experimenting with lenses and low light.

Make sure you log on and take a look at the tutorials – they’ll be a great help to take your photography to the next level.

Speaking of taking your photography to the next level, we’ve been really impressed by the incredible levels of creativity evident on EOS Photochains. We’ve now had close to 5,000 images uploaded and more than 500 chains started. Every day we’re blown away by how good your images are and how you continue to push the creative boundaries. Keep it up!

As we head into August, some of you are probably wondering when the next EOS Photo5 competition will start. While I can’t give too much away, I can tell you that we’ve spent the past month putting the final touches on what we believe is going to be the most exciting and creatively challenging competition to date. To see more great photos like the ones below check out the winners from last years competition on the EOS Photo5 site.

Stay tuned and watch this space! We’ll be posting more details about Photo5 soon...

Well, that’s it from me. Until next time.

Chris

Hi Chris, I have read that there are preregistration emails being sent out to those that participated in last years photo5 competition. How come i haven't received anything as yet?

Hi Kerstin, it is likely that you did not receive the pre-registration email as it was only sent to those who had requested to receive information from Canon about new products, services and special offers. The official registration date for EOS Photo5 opens mid-morning on Monday 31st August so I’d recommend you check the site then to ensure you can register www.canon.com.au/worldofeos/photo5. Best of luck in the competition!

IS the Photo 5 comp JUST for DSLR owners, or can any camera be used (as in past comps)???? (You just *KNEW* this question was gonna come up sooner or later. LOL!) And what about image dimensions, etc. I know these have been bones of contention in the past, so clarification NOW would be a good idea. ;o)

Hi rhemaangel, participation in the Canon EOS Photo5 competition is not restricted to DSLR users, however judging will be based on creativity and photographic technique and therefore, DSLR skills would be preferable.

In regards to image dimensions, EOS Photo5 will only accept JPEG images that are under 5mb. I’d recommend heading to the FAQs page on the Photo5 website to find out more - www1.canon.com.au/.../FAQ

Hope this helps!

Will the open brief be open for professional photographers as well as people who have missed out on registering?

Sep 01 2009, 02:25 PM

Anna said:

Hi Jo, it is $35,000 gross income (including any applicable tax and superannuation).

Hi Sarah, rules surrounding the open brief are the same as for the rest of the competition - so only those who have earned under $35,000 (AU$35,000 for Australian residents and NZ$35,000 for NZ residents)from photography work during the last 12 months can enter.

Thanks Anna, but what if you run your own business, is it gross income (ie total sales/turnover) or taxable income (after expenses - eg printing, phone, power, depreciation etc etc.  I take your answer to read if you were working for someone as a photographer and your gross salary was $35,000.

Anna said:

Hi Jo, it’s based on gross revenue/income only.

Just want to clarify things,

What are the rules on photoshop (photo editing software) usage?

Sep 04 2009, 07:28 PM

Anna said:

Hi Eddie, entries submitted after using photo editing software will be valid, however Judges will be asked to consider the response to the brief first, so less is more. It’s about your idea. Good luck!

I have registered with the competition but it says that you will receive an email with details about your registration. I haven't got this email yet so has it not gone through properly?

Hi Sarah,

In regards to your question about whether your registration was successful, you should have got a confirmation screen after you registered, there isn’t a confirmation email. If you can’t remember whether you got the confirmation screen then you can send an email to the Photo5 support team, Photo5@canon.com.au, and they can check if you registration was successful.

I hope that helps!
