Interview with latest Photochains hero chain winner - Patrick

We asked the latest Photochains hero chain winner, Patrick, to share the inspiration behind his amazing photo of a waterfall and what inspires him in his photography...

Q: What inspired this shot?
I live on the NSW Central Coast, an area which has great coastal and rainforest bushwalks. This shot was taken after heavy rain in Brisbane Water National Park. I was trying to capture the beauty of the waterfall cascading through the gully.

The photo was taken with an SLR mounted on a tripod, using a very long exposure to emphasise the flow of water.

Q: Why did you choose ' green ' as the link?
I chose GREEN because it is a subject open to a wide range of interpretations. It can be anything from a simple green colored object to environmental issues.

Q: How would you describe yourself as a photographer?
I have been a keen amateur photographer for more than 40 years. I was a member of a local camera club for many years and I had the good fortune of learning photographic techniques from very knowledgeable fellow members.  My main interest is environmental photography.

Does anyone else think this “competition” would be more legitimate and more worthwhile if it was harder to cheat?  Some things need to change.

Firstly, the sign up process should involve having to validate an email address.  This would make it a lot more difficult for people to create a million fake accounts and then vote for themselves – which at the moment, is ridiculously easy.

Secondly, there is no point allowing people to vote for their own images! This system basically means that everyone gets one vote (form themselves) and the only reason anyone would ever get more is due to cheating (having multiple accounts, for example). Sure that’s not 100% true, because some people may not vote for their own images, but there is still DEFFINETLY some truth in it, and therefore the quality of the vote would DEFFINETLY be higher if people were not allowed to vote for their own images.

I’m a big fan of this “photo chains thingy”, and I would love to see it improved.  I’m curious to see what others think.

Cheers,

Ahron :)

Hi Ahron,

We monitor any suspicious activity in voting (i.e multiple quick successions votes for one image) as that would indicate a spam. We also really do look to the community with trust to make the right and fare decision.

The reality is that there is no fool proof way to validate email addresses/ensure each person only registers one address. If someone really wants to cheat they will be able to BUT in saying this we have seen a very even spread of votes across the board indicating that this is not happening and will continue to keep a close eye on it.

Regarding not allowing people to vote for their own image we will look into this and get back to you.

Thanks

Meredith
